Pan Macmillan

Your team
You’ll be reporting into the Head of Analytics, alongside a senior Data Analyst and a Data Engineer, in this small but dynamic project team. We’re responsible for providing accurate and timely data to enable insight-driven decision-making throughout the business. The team manages an ever-evolving data warehouse, which we’re in the process of migrating to Snowflake, and a suite of automated Tableau dashboards and reporting. Our projects address commercial and business priorities.

Your role
Day to day you will be querying our SQL data warehouse to create Tableau dashboards and reports that support informed decision-making across the business. You will be using and communicating sales, market and operational data. You can also expect to be involved with maintaining and updating our existing suite of dashboards, working with our data engineer to ensure the quality and accuracy of data and assisting dashboard users to self-serve wherever possible.

This role is ideal for a detail-oriented book lover who naturally looks to data and research to find answers, and has the ability to effectively communicate this insight to others. You will have at least 1–3 years’ experience as a Data Analyst or in a relevant data-handling role.

Your key responsibilities

  • Understand reporting and insight needs

  • Participate in requirement-gathering and specification activities

  • Develop digestible and visually appealing automated dashboards to actively promote self-service, efficiency and transparency

  • Communicate insight to stakeholders: email, written reports, presenting at meetings, etc., including answering one-off questions, regular reporting and writing commentary

  • Support and train others to self-serve and familiarise themselves with Analytics dashboards and tools

  • Support the data engineer role with the maintenance and development of the data warehouse to ensure accurate delivery of quality data: monitoring pipelines, packages, data prep, data cleansing, documentation, testing and verification

  • Documentation and administrative duties, including specification and documentation of new data sources

  • Manage workload using Asana to ensure timely deliverables as part of a project team.

Essential experience, abilities and knowledge you’ll need to succeed

  • An enquiring mind that enjoys problem-solving, with the ability to refine questions and translate from numbers to meaning

  • Experience or knowledge of using data visualisation / BI tools to create user-friendly graphs, tables and dashboards

  • Proficiency with the Microsoft suite, especially Excel (including formulas, functions, pivots, and preferably macros / VBA)

  • Working knowledge of using SQL to create queries and views to enable analysis

  • The ability to create and maintain relevant documentation

  • Some experience with handling and cleaning data (with an interest or experience in the principles of data engineering)

  • Ability to think both practically and visionarily about applications and sources of data – demonstrate initiative, creativity and flexibility in delivering solutions

  • A commercial awareness with the ability to work both at detail and strategic level for data-driven decision-making

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present and interpret data to non-data audiences

  • Collaborative team player with a willingness to contribute ideas

  • Excellent attention to detail with a focus on accuracy, relevancy and quality

  • Ability to work under pressure and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.

Desirable skills we’d love you to have

  • An interest or experience in publishing, reading or the contemporary book market

  • Experience with publishing technologies and systems, e.g. Biblio, Vista, Midas, BookScan
