The Opportunity

EDF Wholesale Market Services (WMS) plays a key role in helping Britain achieve Net Zero by trading, managing and optimising electricity generation and storage assets, helping balance the National Grid and buying energy for EDF’s customers.

The WMS Tech Team helps Britain Achieve Net Zero and delivers value across the WMS Business. The team is building and running a resilient, efficient, scalable, and flexible data platform that enables the wider WMS team to build and implement data products such as Volume Forecasting, AI Trading Insight, automated dashboards and advanced analytics that provide actionable insight.

We are looking for a talented Data Engineer to deliver the data capability by developing data solutions and creating quality data assets and products across WMS.

What you’ll be doing

As the Data Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Technical Competency: Be a technically competent delivering data engineering capability
  • Team: Comfortable in a self-organising environment whereby you’re constantly making decisions on how to approach data solutions with minimal guidance
  • Product Vision: You will understand the data vision set by the Product Owners, Technical Leads and Architects and ensure that you develop data functionality that aligns to the wider vision
  • Architectural Principles: Understanding data architecture principles and how they apply to your own activity
  • Standards and Best Practices: Ensuring that your development activities follow standards and best practices wherever possible, including data governance principles and data cataloguing
  • Coding: Developing code that is of a strong competency level, structured and optimised appropriately
  • Data Modelling: Recommended data modelling methodologies require adherence and you will understand multiple methodologies in the data platform well enough to ensure that data capability follows agreed modelling practices
  • Security and Privacy: Ensure that data capabilities are secure and private by design
  • Vendor Products: Use your strong understanding of the platform vendors to advise what functionality and techniques are applicable in different scenarios
  • Agile Best Practices: Promote and enforce the adoption of agile best practices, tools, and techniques within the product teams, ensuring adherence to Scrum framework principles
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate with product owners, development teams, and stakeholders to ensure a clear understanding of product vision, priorities, and requirements.
  • Continuous Improvement: Actively seek opportunities for continuous improvement, both at the team level and across the organisation, through retrospectives, knowledge sharing, and agile coaching.
  • Coaching: Be the guider of the fellow Data Engineers or business users seeking to use data capabilities, setting up regular training sessions to upskill colleagues
  • Training and Development: participating in training programs to develop and enhance your skills and knowledge


Who you are

We are looking for a strong communicator with the ability to effectively convey complex concepts and influence stakeholders at all levels.  To ensure the data functionality on the data platform is developed to the highest quality, you will have a solid understanding of cloud data tooling. This could be either ETL or ELT tooling or enterprise data platforms. You’ll also demonstrate strong SQL skills to help you build data pipelines and data stores. Knowledge of Python is also advantageous.You will need to have a strong understanding of data engineering best practices and standards that you have developed into data functionality to be consumed by technical teams and users. You’ll be passionate about continuously challenging the status quo and seeking solutions to make accessibility and useability of the data platforms easier for people of all technical levels.It’s essential that you have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to address conflicts and impediments to keep the team on track.
